"The Happening" (Writing about the movie)

Weird, topic, but thismovie REALLy made me think...

Though it was slightly predictable to me, it was really good. It didnt have so many special effects that make the entire story unbelievable. It was just one of those movies that stand out, and seem entirely likely and yet unlikely at the same time. It really made me question and think about that situation, and it was focused on the big picture rather than some small insignificant part of life

The main theme is one that is likely plausible, yet I'm not sure how true it is. WHAT IF plants really could revolt against humans, causing us all to kill ourselves? Exactly HOW badly are we treating our Earth, and WHO would actually try hard enough to stop it? Face it, most people dont give a shit about the environment, or what'll happen to our future family members once we've contaminated the Earth. Not saying I'm the most Earth conscious person, because I know that I'm just as bad as so many others out there.

Most people don't consider plants animate objects. Though they know they're living, breathing creatures, somewhere in their mind, it doesn't connect. But, if you really tthink about it, if animals can have emotions (though shown completely differently), couldn't plants too? Don't they have ways of communicating with each other? The idea sort of sounds idiotic, but in reality, whats so crazy about it? Now, thinking all of that through, the plants could revolt just as easily as humans have against opressing or formerly dominant groups and life forms. In reality, it'd be worse than a human revolution. Plants, have natural ways, such as toxins, to fight back, which are much more deadly and extremely more clever. Humans, however, are now too dominated by man-made items to be instinctual and fight naturally.

The irony is, the humans all died due to man made elements and tools. None killed themself by use of fire, water, or any other natural element. Though they were all decently available, I think this is sort of symbolic...(you know, that thing english teachers try to teach). The movie could possibly be saying that too much progress in technology and society could be the death of us all. (Yes, thats an extreme statement...just the easiest way to say it). Also, no animals died. The few animals even seen in the movie could sense something wrong and got out of there as soon as they posssibly could.

As I write this, I come up with more questions. Everyone knows the advantages of technology and the advancement of the human race. What about the downfalls? What natural senses and/or instincts have humans lost due to this? What key knowledge are we slowly forgetting as time races on? It's wise knowledge that everything thats bad has a good side...doesn't that mean the opposite is true? Everything has a price to be paid...

Specifcally, the movie focused on the Northeastern states...(my home lol). They suggested reasons in the film as to why only this specific targetted area...It could be a warning. But it was also pointed out to me that thats the most populated area in our country. Could it also have been to eliminate much of the problem of humanity? Is that where the human/plant ratio is more equivalent? Whats your guess?

As it goes, there were some parts that I didnt like so much, but were'nt horrible. It certain spots, it made you question the characters...what they knew...if there was more between them than was let known...etc etc etc. M. Night. Shaymalan (i probably spelt that wrong...anywho, he's the writer and drecter person) is known for his paranormal movies (Sixth Sense, Signs, Lady in the Water). Knowing this, I thought maybe Jess (the little girl) might hear the plants talking, or have visions. It made her more of a focus to me, that suggested there was something with her. But, it was never stated or mentioned. Nothing paranormal was mentioned. Another thing I had wondering, was if Jess was the daughter of Julian and Elma. Though they each had their own spouses, there were certain questioning looks and tones/statements between the two. The little girl had features which could have easily made her the mixture between them, yet nothing about that was mentioned either.
